...don't give it a second thought, if you are fit and well, donate blood, it can save lives.
Blood donors saved my life:
I was back home with my nearly 3 week old baby boy, just about to sit down for a barbecue when I haemorrhaged and started losing blood fast. I knew something wasn’t quite right, so my husband called for an ambulance. I had a further spell of bleeding about half an hour after being taken to maternity ward. The doctors and midwives had it under control but because I’d lost so much they advised I would be better with a transfusion. I had no idea what it entailed at the time but remember one doctor coming to tell me “you need to have this” while I was still mulling it over and weighing up the options!
True enough I did need it as I haemorrhaged again around 10 hours after the first spell. Had I not received the transfusion throughout that evening and into the early morning I honestly don't think I’d be here today. I owe my life to the staff at Causeway Hospital, Coleraine – maternity, theatre and ICU. They definitely saved my life but so did the donors who provided the blood.
So don't give it a second thought, if you are fit and well, donate blood, it can save lives. I regret not being a donor before I needed to be a receiver!
